Coaching: The Power of Questions
Coaching is a large and complex subject. But at its heart lies effective questioning skills.
In Coaching: The Power of Questions we provide you and your managers with practical illustrations of how to use questions to help a person think through a problem or a task for him or herself.
If it is a manager’s intention to coach the other person, the type of questions they use will be different from those questions designed simply to elicit information. How to ask ‘Coaching Questions’ is what this programme is about.
In the drama DVD your managers see how to use sequences of questions to open up another person’s thought processes so that they are able to explore a problem or task for themselves. The manager’s role is to help the other person think through the various elements of a task; evaluate the pros and cons of different approaches and to work out an appropriate way forward.
It’s so tempting to give an answer when you are asked a question (regardless of whether you really know the answer or not!). But the effective coach holds back and seizes the opportunity to help the questioner arrive at his or her own solution.
What about the G.R.O.W model?
Whilst focusing specifically on questioning skills, ‘Coaching: The Power of Questions’ is entirely compatible with the G.R.O.W. model. The User’s Guide explicitly refers to it and the programme overall is designed to provide useful new material to complement this widely used approach to Coaching.
