Feedback: Fixing Performance Problems

Whether it’s at an appraisal or part of everyday interaction, giving negative feedback is one of the most important, yet difficult skills an effective manager needs to develop.
Your managers learn to
:

  • Be specific about the feedback they want to give – and about why they want to give it.
  • Keep an open mind.  They need to explore the situation for the other person’s perspective – not start out thinking they know the answer.
  • Agree on the facts. What is actually happening and why?  Focus on the facts, not on the person.
  • Be courteous and respectful. People are more likely to improve if they feel good about themselves.
  • Accept counter-feedback.  They won’t be able to focus on performance issues until they have addressed criticism directed at them.

In the film, Bob has a problem with Damek’s work.  And he’s made the matter worse by expressing his frustration during Damek’s appraisal.  When encouraged to re-examine what’s happened by his mentor Ninaz, Bob learns how to use the model C.E.D.A.R. to prepare for and engage in constructive feedback sessions. He discovers how to Clarify the performance he expects to see; Explain how things look from his perspective; Discuss the situation; Agree on how they are going to fix the problem; and Review the results of the feedback.
